Pregnant AND a Liar?

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Finding a good job is hard enough--so how did a woman land a prestigious military post when seven months pregnant?

CarmeChacon.jpg

Not only is Carme Chacon the first woman ever to be defense minister in her native Spain, she's also pregnant. Really pregnant. Makes us wonder if she was upfront about her condition when the Spanish Prime Minister appointed her to the post last week. Did she hide behind a couch during the interview? In the U.S., under the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act, it's against the law to refuse to hire someone because she's pregnant. Still-- waddling walking into a job interview carrying WAY more than just a resume seems like job placement suicide.

Did you ever keep your pregnancy a secret from a potential boss?

Yes, because even though they didn’t say anything, I thought it would be used against me and make them go for the other person instead.

What kind of story is this? Good for her. If she doesn’t have the experience, that’s another issue. I don’t understand the tone of the headline and find it insulting.

To me it seems like it’s so amazing that this woman got the job. You almost have to wonder how she managed it. No one is saying she’s a liar. But WOW. I know when i was interviewing for a job when I was pregnant I was terrified to let on.

I think it’s great that she was given the job. I was abroad in Germany for four years. When I was 6 months pregnant we moved back to the U.S. I began right away to interview for positions in my field. I was basically rejected for every position I interviewed for. It wasn’t until after I had the baby, that I was able to find employment. However, this did not change my employment odds. After working three months at a gallery in NYC, I was basically pushed out by the owners, because I was taking off when my daughter was sick. I received intimidating emails home and was spoken to rather disrespectfully in addition to the emails regarding absences that I was basically entitled to. After leaving there one year ago, I am still looking for work and my family is struggling to survive in Westchester area of NY. During the past year I have interviewed and have been asked point blank if I have a child or told, “wow it must be hard having a family,” “why did you quit your job before you found another one? Oh your husband was probably working so it didn’t matter….” I have contacted news stations, newspapers, womens forums, my own college which is a women’s college, wouldn’t even help me with my job search. No one really gives a damn. I think it’s rather sad, because great women who are educated are being passed over or kicked out because they are using their god given right to procreate. I give this woman who received this position my respect. I just hope that women pregnant in the media and on local news stations, will help blow away the discrimination that is being used against women in the work place.
