Hillary Town Hall: One Cool Mom

Saturday, May 3, 2008

When ML's style contributor, Mary Alice Haney, co-hosted our town hall meeting in North Carolina Saturday, she asked herself: How does Hillary keep her cool?

As I walked around talking to the women in the audience waiting for Senator Clinton to arrive, many of them spoke to me about the hardships they were having with gas prices so high and healthcare beyond their family's reach. I realized that for them this town hall meeting was not about meeting a "celebrity," but a woman who they hoped could change their lives.

The Senator Clinton I spent time with today was warm and honest. She spoke of her struggles and hardships as a wife and mother. She has been criticized for being hard and aggressive, and all I could think was, "How does she do this all day long?"

After a week, I would lose my temper and slap the fire out of someone.

The one thing that really stayed with me was how exhausted she must be and how extraordinary the life Senator Clinton has already led. Win or lose, today I was blessed to spend time with a history-making woman.

I totally agree. I look at these politicians on the campaign trail and wonder how they keep it going 24/7…how sick they must get of hearing themselves talk…but then I look at hillary and wonder how in the world she manages it all—being a mother and a politican!?

I also totally agree. I’ve really felt for her having to field and hear unfair, hateful attacks that would not be OK if directed at the male candidates. Seems it’s still a popular feeling with too many that if a man is firm and strong—-he’s a leader, or “go-getter” “hard-charger”. Same word or deed by woman leads to the “B” word. I still wish Sen McCain had gently chastised the supporter who actually called her that in a question. Sexism and ageism are taken so much lighter than racism.
