Kiss and Sell?

A U.K. Heinz mayonnaise ad depicting two men kissing has some saying "Hold the mayo."

After making the kids their lunches (sandwiches generously slathered with mayo) a couple kisses goodbye in front of the children. A typical domestic scene, except the couple consists of two men. So infuriated were critics of the ad, they successfully lobbied to have it banned.

"(They) were concerned that the ad would force them to explain same-sex relationships and homosexuality to their children," said a rep from the Advertising Standards Authority. Now gay activists are calling for a massive boycott of all Heinz products.

Nigel Dickie, a Heinz spokesman, released a statement explaining the concept of the commercial, "The mum transforms into a New York deli chef because this sandwich taste is so good," he says. "It's like having your own deli chef in the kitchen. It wasn't intended to be a gay couple, it was intended to be a humorous metaphor for these great-tasting sandwiches."

Are you buying it?

LOL I guess I am just naive or something because my first thought when I saw the commercial was that the mom had been changed into the stereotypical New York Deli chef just like they said in their official explanation. I had not thought about it being a gay commercial. I just thought it was a dumb way to sell mayo. Does that mean the guys in the Sonic ads are gay or bisexual or something too? And maybe all those ladies in those undies commercial who frolic together are lesbians too? So now that it has been pointed out to me I will start to see a gay behind every product ;-) … who really cares if the people in commercials are gay or not? The mayo is the same no matter what lame ads they design to try to sell it. I just hope none of them show up in my kitchen in the mornings because I look worse than the deli-guy does before I have had my coffee…. ;-)

The first thing I thought was, “Oh that’s that’s the mom.” The first kid calls him “Mum”. And even if it was supposed to be a gay couple, why are they so scared to explaining to their children that there are some men who like and marry other men. Nobody boycotted Will and Grace. The L Word is still on. Queer as Folk had its run. Get over it people. Gay people are a part of our society whether you like it or not. Would you rather your child see two men kissing on the street and have to explain it to them then?

I buy Heinz’s explanation. It is not about a same sex relationship. People need to lighten up and see the humor in the ad. I don’t think this ad will hurt any children. It might actually be a good lead in for Mom and Dad to explain about homosexuality, if a child asks about the ad. Children will be exposed to homosexuality whether on television or not.

What is a “Gay activist”? Is that someone who is in favor of homosexuality? If so why are they upset? and ….If “Gay activist” means someone who is against homosexuality why in the world don’t they call themselves “anti-gay activists or something.
