How the orthodontist became a teen's best friend during a gunfight.

The next time your kid is griping about the metal-mouth, tell him this: When 16-year-old Anthony Pittman was struck in the mouth by a stray bullet during a shooting in Pontiac, Mich., police credit his braces for saving his life.

The bullet became fragmented when it struck the metallic teeth straighteners, preventing it from penetrating the back of his neck. Unfortunately, he suffered injuries to his tongue---and many of his teeth were broken. We're not sure if he resisted getting braces, but we bet he's glad he has them now.

Will you share this story with your teen?

OMG! What an incredible story. I’m so relieved to know the boy lived and hopefully makes a full recovery. It’s sad about the teeth and the pain he endured, the pain his mother lived through and all the worrying she must have suffered, too. This will be the story he someday tells his grandkids that they’ll never believe…
